We're like diamonds in the sky.

Self Improvement

I don't know about you but I find, if I'm starting something new, I prefer to start on a Monday. So that's what today is! Today I'm starting my 30 day clean up. I've always been one of those people who likes unhealthy food a little too much and will happily not do much exercise but then will complain no end if I put weight on or don't look exactly how I like. Sadly I've noticed, in the last month or so, I've been eating even worse than normal due to going out for meals and parties lots the week before leaving uni, then getting here and not knowing how to cook particularly so being lazy and eating rubbish, and have therefore put on some weight.

And before anyone says anything, I KNOW I'M NOT OVERWEIGHT. People always assume that you have to be morbidly obese to want to lose weight and tone up, which I greatly disagree with. I understand that it's not right for some people who are extremely skinny to want to, as there's not much of them to actually lose! But if like me, you were a normal, healthy size before but have now put on a little, then that means there's something to lose and personally, I want to lose it.

I might also add that this is not all about losing weight. I'm quite ill and food especially can determine if I'm OK one day, and horribly ill the next so hopefully eating well and exercising will help this.
So now onto the actual changes! ..

Like I said, I've always liked my chocolate, curry and other naughty things (a bit too much!) and of course there's nothing wrong with that. Unless like me you don't eat any fruit or veg, then it's an issue. So this is the first change. I have previously tried eating healthy but I did it in an all-or-nothing way, where I try cutting out ALL unhealthy food, which just does not work for me.

So here's the plan:

- Eat healthily Monday to Friday (with the exception of one 'naughty' thing every few days, just to keep me sane).
- On Saturdays and Sundays I can cool off a little, still eating well but allowing myself to relax and have a few more goodies.
- Eat at least 3 pieces of fruit and veg a day (I know it's meant to be 5 a day, but going from nothing to that would just freak me out and make me fail).
- Drink at least 2 bottles of water a day (similarly to the fruit and veg, I know its meant to be more, but I normally drink 2 bottles of water a week [that's not even an exaggeration :( boo to me] so 2 a day will do me nicely).

My Fitness Pal

My Fitness Pal is an app I'll be using to help me stay on track. I know some of you will disagree with 'calorie counting' which is understandable, but it's only for 30 days so a little help keeping track of how much I eat would be nice. For those of you who don't know, My Fitness Pal is an app designed to help you log what and how much you're eating, including a calorie counter, and also log how much exercise you do. I've set my daily calorie allowance at 1200, which is low, but it's something to aim for and if I do go over slightly, I won't feel too guilty ;) If you get the app you can connect with me to see how I'm doing by adding me @alexmaceachern!

Next up is exercise. Being a lazy bugger, being able to find exercise routines to do at home is a god send. I was watching this Youtube video the other day by Sammi from The Sammi Maria Show, and she was talking about how she lost a stone in just 30 days from doing this 30 day shred from Jillian Michaels. It can be done at home (and found on Youtube so you don't have to buy the DVD hehe shh!) and only takes 20 minutes each day. This is also the main reason I'm doing this clean up over 30 days, as I'll do it in conjunction with this training (plus it apparently takes approx 21 days to create a habit so hopefully these 30 days will turn the healthy eating and exercise into a habit, and not just something forced). Below I have included the three videos which I'll be following, one video per week.

There are lots of other little things I'd like to try to control and change over the next 30 days. One main one is my lip. You may or may not know that I have severely dry lips and when I get particularly sad/bored/nervous etc, I pick my lips (so jubby, I know). I now have this one spot on my lip that is a constant pain and I end up picking it subconsciously, which is now causing me genuine problems as it can become a medical issue (the skin is very damaged and can be prone to things like cancer, now you see why I want to stop? Haha!). And to be honest, it looks horrid and I simply don't want it any more. So I'm going to try my absolute hardest to stop picking at it and hopefully let it heal.

Another thing is money. I know it's not a self improvement, clean up thing as such, but my bank account needs some serious help as I have some sort of addiction to buying things, even if I know I don't need them. So over the next 30 days, I'm going to try and cool off on the buying. I don't think I can bring myself to go on a spending ban completely, but I'll only buy things that are on my 'needs' list, rather than my 'want' list.

As for the other things, they're not overly significant, but are just little things I want to do. Things such as comment on 5 people's blogs a day (I know how nice it feels when others comment on mine, so I want to hopefully give others that feeling), use more face and hair masks, keep on top of and above the requirement for uni work, keep organised, do one thing everyday to make someone else smile, etc.

So there you have it. My plan for the next 30 days. I'd love love love it if any of you would like to join me, makes it a lot easier with someone else! If you do, please either comment or let me know on twitter (alexmaceachern) and we can get going together!

And so to finish off, today's weigh in comes out at: 9 stone, 6 pounds.

  1. I would love to join you! I have eaten too much rubbish for the past few weeks, so I really need the motivation and I think this would help :) A bit ago I found a really good youtube channel called 'blogilates' and she does lots of workout routines and I found the 'Inner Thigh Insanity' one was amazing (if not a little tiring) xx

  2. I would love to weigh 9 stone 6! But I understand completely what you mean about eating junk and not getting fat makes you kid yourself it's ok when on the inside it's really not doing you any good. I never really put on much weight even if I eat like a pig ( and I often do!) just going from a 10/12 when I'm good and a 12/14 when I'm bad but I dread to think what my poor insides look like. Good on you for all the things you are trying to do in the next 30 days, they're all things I should be doing too I just don't know if I have the willpower right now. I look forward to seeing how you get on though. Good luck!! xx

  3. woooo go alex. Sounds like you're really motivated and ready to see some change, good luck with it! I'm like you and i adore naghty food too. I think the trick is to find soemthin healthy that you love, and find a form of excercise you love. i had 'excerse' like the gym etc. but i love to run... so that works for me. You'll do great you beaut:) x

  4. ahh i cant wait to get on a health kick after having our baby! x

  5. good luck! i'm supposed to be healthy as of this week, but had a gigantic tea! oops

  6. Ooh I feel you on that and I agree, you don't need to be obese to start working out and eating more healthy! Sounds like a good plan hope you'll be successful :) xx

  7. Good luck on your healthy start, I tell myself this every Monday, lol! I sooooo need to drink more water too, like you I barely drink two bottles a week, opps!

p.s check out the giveaway on my blog!!

  8. Good luck with this, I think a treat every few days is a good plan as otherwise falling of the wagon is a strong possibility! When I wanted to lose a little bit of weight I would still have a couple of squares of chocolate at the end of each day if I'd stuck to my plan, and that seemed to work for me.

  9. Good luck with this. I think a treat every couple of days is a good plan, stops you falling off the wagon :) When I wanted to lose a bit of weight I would still allow myself a couple of squares of chocolate at the end of each day if I'd stuck to my plan, and that seemed to work for me :)
